GBICs and SFPs

GBICs (Gigabit Interface Converter) and SFPs (Small Form-Factor Pluggable) are modules designed for low cost LAN, SAN, WAN and Gigabit Ethernet applications. SFPs are also known as ‘Mini GBICs’ as they are half the size of a standard GBIC.

You can use both GBICs and SFPs as network device interfaces in mainframes, workstations, servers and storage devices. They can also be used in a broad range of network devices such as bridges, routers, hubs, media converters and local and wide area switches. Multimode and single mode units are available and are compatible with OS1, OM1, OM2 and OM3 fibre types.

Features & Benefits

Convenient and flexible way to add capacity and speed to a network
Ability to change fibre types without changing equipment as the units can be swapped for single mode, multimode or even copper RJ45 interfaces
SFP and MSA compliant
Gigabit Ethernet compliant
Fibre channel compliant
Hot pluggable
LC duplex interface (SPF)
SC duplex interface (GBIC)
EEPROM with serial ID functionality

Applications

Add capacity and speed to a network
Change fibre types without changing equipment
Note: Some manufacturers have encoded EEPROMs which only work on their own equipment. Please consult equipment specifications where required.
